What Exactly Is an ETF?
An exchange-traded fund (ETF) holds a basket of securities — stocks, bonds, or other assets — and issues units that trade on a stock exchange, just like shares of a company. When you buy a Canadian equity ETF on the TSX, you're not transacting directly with the fund manager: you're buying a unit from another investor at the current market price.

The Creation and Redemption Mechanism
Behind every ETF are specialized financial institutions called authorized participants (APs) — typically large banks or market makers. They are the only entities that can create or redeem units directly with the ETF manager.
Creating New Units
