Compare brokers without confusing brokerage and analytics

Fees, account types, currencies, transfers and analytics depth: the criteria that change the real experience.

Updated July 17, 2026 · Canadian educational resource

Short answer: a broker holds accounts and executes trades; WealthWise analyzes positions from one or several brokers. The roles complement each other and are not competing services.

Compare total cost, not only commission

A $0 trade can still involve a bid-ask spread, CAD-USD conversion cost, administration charge or subscription. Compare published fees against your actual behaviour: trading frequency, conversion size and account types.

The broker supplies transactions; analytics supplies context

A broker dashboard is built around that broker’s accounts. If a TFSA sits at one broker, an RRSP elsewhere and an FHSA at a third institution, each dashboard remains incomplete.

An independent tracker brings positions together, preserves account type, calculates consolidated allocation and highlights duplication. It does not replace the broker or move the assets.

Security and transfers

Check registration and protection

Use official registries and the institution’s documentation before opening an account.

Prefer read-only access for analytics

A tracking connection should not be able to place orders or withdraw funds.

Separate tracking from transferring

Building a consolidated view does not require moving investments. A formal transfer solves a different need.

Sources and method

Frequently asked questions

Is WealthWise a broker?

No. WealthWise is a portfolio analytics tool. It does not hold assets or execute trades.

Must I transfer accounts to analyze them together?

No. Accounts can remain at their current institutions. A read-only connection or import can create a consolidated view.

Does $0 commission mean no fees?

No. Currency conversion, bid-ask spreads, administration fees and fund MERs may still apply.

How should I compare currency-conversion fees?

Read the broker’s official fee schedule and compare the applied rate with a reference rate at the same time. Fees and methods can change.
