FHSA limits: history, carryforward and lifetime maximum
FHSA room does not accumulate before the account is opened. That difference from a TFSA changes the calculation for someone who waits several years.

FHSA limits from 2023 to 2026
| Year | New annual room | Lifetime limit | Checkpoint |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 | $8,000 | $40,000 | First year of the program |
| 2024 | $8,000 | $40,000 | Carryforward possible after an earlier opening |
| 2025 | $8,000 | $40,000 | Check contributions and deductible transfers |
| 2026 | $8,000 | $40,000 | Review the notice of assessment and records |
The annual limit is not multiplied by the number of accounts. Multiple FHSAs share the same participation room and lifetime limit.
Carryforward begins after the first account opens
An eligible person who opens their first FHSA in 2026 normally starts with $8,000 of room, even if they were eligible in 2023. In contrast, someone who opened an account in 2025 and made no contribution can generally have $16,000 in 2026: $8,000 of new room plus up to $8,000 carried forward.
Participation-room example
Marie opens an FHSA in 2024 and contributes $3,000. She has $5,000 unused. In 2025, she receives $8,000 of new room and can therefore contribute up to $13,000. If she contributes $4,000 in 2025, the amount carried into 2026 remains subject to the permitted maximum: unused room does not stack without limit.
Direct RRSP-to-FHSA transfers also use participation room. They do not create a new RRSP deduction and count toward the FHSA lifetime limit.
What to do before a large contribution
Find the opening date
The date of the first FHSA determines when room began to accumulate.
Add every account
Combine contributions and transfers made at all institutions.
Check reported room
Compare your records with the notice of assessment and CRA information.
Correct an excess quickly
An excess amount can trigger a 1% monthly tax while it remains in the plan.
Understand the complete FHSA
The limit is only one part of the decision: eligibility, qualifying withdrawals and the HBP interaction also matter.
Sources and method
Rules, limits and fees change. The primary sources below were reviewed on July 17, 2026. Always verify the official version before acting.
- CRA — contributing to an FHSA — annual room, carryforward and lifetime limit
- CRA — FHSA estimator — participation-room estimation

Frequently asked questions
Do I have $32,000 of room if I open my first FHSA in 2026?
No. Room is not retroactive to 2023. A first opening in 2026 normally creates $8,000 of room for that year.
Can I contribute $8,000 to two FHSAs in the same year?
Not with only $8,000 of room. Participation room is shared across every FHSA, regardless of institution.
Is unused carryforward unlimited?
No. The unused amount that may be carried and added to new room in a year is capped.
Does an RRSP-to-FHSA transfer create a second deduction?
No. The direct transfer uses FHSA room but does not create a new deduction for an amount already deducted in the RRSP.
